Hard-Boiled Detective Fiction: The L.A. Environment in the '30s

This is a very interesting short video on the history of Hard-Boiled Fiction. The commentator deserves kudos for asking the viewer to fact check his commentary. We learned something from the video, something that we never bothered to consider, but the author points it out clearly, that the hard-boiled genre was born in California with Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

Hard-Boiled Books loves to share the media that makes up the hard-boiled fiction genre. Often we share classic Old Time Radio shows featuring many of the top detectives of the era such as Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade, Jeff Regan, and others.

We find inspiration in these old shows.

These old radio shows have inspired us to create our very own Radio Show in the tradition of the Old Time Radio Classics. Our first show is in production now. The  exact release date is not scheduled  as of yet, that will change as the project gets closer to completion. At this stage of the shows development, we have a finished radio script and have begun some initial testing production.

Harvey finds himself investigating a lead in Muskegon Heights, to an abandoned house owned by his client's husband's law firm. The following video is more accurate of the scenery and environment Harvey finds himself in while pursuing his client's husband.

Background on Gold Digger: Muskegon Heights

In Gold Digger, the novel and audiobook, Harvey Valentine Private Investigator has to venture into Muskegon Heights. It's not quite as bad as the video here of Detroit, but it's getting there. It's not uncommon to find several houses on both sides of the street and on most streets in the Heights with abandoned, burned up homes marked with gang signs.

Per capita Muskegon Heights ranks just below Detroit in violent crime and property crime and it's only a city of 10,000 people.

Philip Marlowe "The Ugly Duckling" Full TV Show

Marlowe pays off a wealthy young woman's husband's mistress, but she doublecrosses him and turns up dead. Episode 1: Original Air Date: October 6, 1959. Philip Marlowe is a fictional private detective created by Raymond Chandler. Marlowe first appeared under that name in The Big Sleep published in 1939. Chandler's early short stories, published in pulp magazines like Black Mask and Dime Detective, featured similar characters with names like "Carmady" and "John Dalmas".

THE CASES OF EDDIE DRAKE

This very short lived series ran originally on CBS and was picked up by DuMont before being cancelled after 13 episodes. Surprisingly well done and unlike most shows of the era was filmed and doesn't just exist as kinescopes. Although some quality is lost by compression to YouTube this is taken from 16mm and should have more detail than most bargain basement versions floating around. Episode title is "Shoot The Works". This was filmed in 1949 but not broadcast until 1952... Enjoy!
